Umpqua Community College
Southern Oregon Wine Institute Teaching & Learning Center

Roseburg, Oregon

FFA, in association with Laurence Ferar and Associates (LFA), is working with Umpqua Community College (UCC) to develop a detailed building program and conceptual design for the new Southern Oregon Wine Institute (SOWI) Teaching and Learning Center. The primary goal for the project is to develop a dynamic new facility that will be the home for SOWI, a program that is focused on supporting economic development of the wine industry in southern Oregon.

The new 22,000 sq. ft. Wine Institute facility will provide space for a functional teaching winery in addition to classrooms, offices, labs and a wine tasting room with retail space. Flex-use spaces will allow for public uses such as weddings, receptions, and other gatherings.

The site for the new facility is a dramatic one on an undeveloped hillside at the edge of the community college campus. The building location was carefully integrated with the site design so that the new facility is optimally located relative to the layout of the adjacent teaching vineyards, and for ideal orientation to light and views. UCC's sustainable design goal for the project is to achieve LEED Silver certification.
